JOSEPH SHELTON WATSON ---1780-1805...family from Louisa Court House...W&M student in 1801!!...built and flew his hot-air balloon in Williamsburg!!!---what a hero!. However, he dies in 1805...cannot find any clues how and why and where buried...Louis Court House area cemetery?...had a brother, David, lawyer, living in LCH...father was James in LCC...brother was George and studying in medicine, later in Edinburgh. I, as a researcher, simply need to find out more about a VIRGINIA hero, Joseph Shelton Watson, and a W&M college student who did the impossible way back in 1801...fascinating!...thanks for any clues...Ron Squire Steffey

  • GIBSON, RATLIFF posted by Joan Gibson on Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Searching for Osborn GIBSON, Thomas GIBSON, born about 1760, 1770 respectively, in Louisa County or nearby, possibly, brothers or cousins and high probability descended from Gibson melungeons, just can't find that one generational link in Louisa county around 1750-1775. Osborn was father to Ellen GIBSON. One of these men (Osborn or Thomas) had sons David GIBSON, born around 1793 or 1801 in Gibson's Mill Creek, Louisa Co., Va., (my great, great, great, great grandfather) and Ambrose GIBSON, a deaf mute, almost 7 feet tall, listed as a negro on the 1850 US census, and John GIBSON - the family moved to Big Bend, WV around 1844 and David and his brothers were killed by union troops - they were fighting for the confederacy. Thomas GIBSON was listed in 1850 US census as being 80 years old and having been born in Albemarle County/Fluvanna County. The only record we have of him is this 1850 census as living in Big Bend, WV and he was on the Louisa County tax rolls in 1826 and 1827. Would appreciate any help on this - we've been trying to solve this one for centuries. David looks very Indian and black, I have a clear photo of him. His first wife was Mary "Polly" RATLIFF, Martin Ratliff's daughter - she looks very Cherokee.
