  • COSBY, DICKINSON, HARRIS, SMITH posted by John Culley on Tuesday, April 1, 1997
  • Email: jahno@comcast.net

Griffeth Dickinson married Ann Cosby 17??. They had a son, Hickerson Cosby Dickinson (also Higginson, Hickinson, etc.). A family tradition says that Ann died when Hickerson was very young. Hickerson was taken to raise by his uncle John Cosby (Ann's brother). It was generally assumed that Hickerson's middle name was his surname since he lived with the Cosby family. Hickerson joined the army (Rev war) under the name Cosby and married under that name. His wife was Nancy (Ann) HARRIS, dtr of Archelaus Harris and Frances SMITH. About 1790 they moved to GA. Any info which will help prove or disprove the family tradition about Hickerson's surname will be appreciated.

  • FINCH, GARDNER posted by CHATHAM on Tuesday, April 1, 1997
  • Email: CHATHAMPIT@AOL.COM

My JOHN GARDNER married Betsy FINCH in Campbell Co 1794. Is this the son of the JOHN GARDNER that died 1791 in Louisa Co, naming his son John Gardner. I would be inclined to think so since there's a strong connection with the Hendricks family for both John Gardners. However, the account of the estate of Stephen Yancey, 1793, names John Gardner that intermarried Ann Yancey, legatee.

Searching for information on Sylvey or Silvie RAGLAND and her son William Ragland, JR. Sylvie was said to be an African slave and William was born @ l847, a mulatto son of William RAGLAND, and was emancipated about the age of two along with 47 others. They came to Jackson County, Ohio about 1854. I would like to know if any manumission records are available for that period and why those slaves were freed. If slave records exist , I would like to find out more about Silvie and her children, William Jr., Silvey, Elizabeth, and Samuel. The land that they settled on was said to have been purchased for them by the Virginia slave owner. There are still a number of Raglands living in that part of Ohio. Thanks for any information you may have.
