  • RICHARDS, WILSON posted by Mike Dowd on Tuesday, July 1, 1997
  • Email: mdowd@wakefields.com

Looking for any information on a John WILSON who was to have married a Susan Elizabeth RICHARDS after the Civil War. The story from a family history is that after coming to America from Ireland;John spent time in New Orleans and then Chicago. When the Civil ;War started he joined J.E.B. Stuarts cavalry. One day while watering their horses at a farm near Louisa, VA. The daughter of the house came down to the well with a bucket to get water. John told her that he was coming back after the war to marry her and he did. Her name was Susan Elizabeth Richards and according to the family history she lived "at Oaklands". They had children, John, James, Robert, Willard, George, Hattie, and Annie. I am not sure if this means Oakland VA or if there was a plantation named "Oaklands". The only John Wilson I found a marriage record for on this website is one who married Alice Annie Tisdale vol 3 page 79 line 37. This is probably circa 1920 based on the page number. This may be the son, I don't know. Any info will be helpful.

Henry HESTER purchased 133-1/2 acres of land in Trinity Parish, Louisa County, from John LEA and Rachel his wife on 14 Aug 1780, for one thousand seventy pounds current money. On 27 December 1780 Henry HESTER and Onney his wife sold the 133-1/2 acres to John YANCEY for two thousand five hundred pounds current money. Since this is a substantial profit, might there be some sort of family connection? The witnesses to the deed were Richard Lane, William McGehee and Nathan Smith. Shortly after the sale, Henry and Onney moved to Granville County NC. I suspect but cannot prove that Henry may be the son of Francis and Agnes HESTER. Does anyone have information on this Henry and on who Onney's parents might be? I have been unable to find their marriage record.
