Looking for any information on a John WILSON who was to have married a Susan Elizabeth RICHARDS after the Civil War. The story from a family history is that after coming to America from Ireland;John spent time in New Orleans and then Chicago. When the Civil ;War started he joined J.E.B. Stuarts cavalry. One day while watering their horses at a farm near Louisa, VA. The daughter of the house came down to the well with a bucket to get water. John told her that he was coming back after the war to marry her and he did. Her name was Susan Elizabeth Richards and according to the family history she lived "at Oaklands". They had children, John, James, Robert, Willard, George, Hattie, and Annie. I am not sure if this means Oakland VA or if there was a plantation named "Oaklands". The only John Wilson I found a marriage record for on this website is one who married Alice Annie Tisdale vol 3 page 79 line 37. This is probably circa 1920 based on the page number. This may be the son, I don't know. Any info will be helpful. - Email: mdowd@wakefields.com

Is this a brother or a son? Following the processioning returns and then census index's it appears that this John had a son named John who married an ANTHONY. Later in the 19th century a John Diggs sells land to a Dudley Diggs. John is (I think) from the Diggs family of Gloucester and Dudley is from the York family of Edward Digges who was governor in early Va history. Are these two men related or are they just selling and buying land and it is a conicidence that they have the same name? On 27 December 1780 Henry HESTER and Onney his wife sold the 133-1/2 acres to John YANCEY for two thousand five hundred pounds current money. Family oral history from my cousin Grace Battaile Rosson states that her mother, Ina Hester Battaile, sister of Lillie reported that Lillie returned to Louisa Co. alone (year unknown--would guess in the 1920s). She, Lillie, was very upset and agitated and waited for several days (weeks?) until she rec'd a letter and immeditely departed by train for, it is assumed, to Seneca Co., NY.
