  • BARNETT, BRADLEY, DAVIS, SMITH posted by Rulon N. Smithson on Sunday, January 19, 2003
  • Email: Rnsmithson@aol.com

SMITH. – Searching for Mary SMITH, daughter of John DAVIS, whose will dated 30 August 1772 was proved 12 April 1773 in Louisa County. Mary Smith's brothers, named in the will, are Samuel, Micajah, William DAVIS (Quakers), and Dickey DAVIS. Mary Smith's sisters are Elizabeth wife of John BRADLEY, and Anne wife of Capt. James BARNETT. These Davis folks (not sure however about Mary Davis-Smith) moved from Louisa County before 1800, some going to Bedford, Albemarle, Amherst, Pittsylvania, and some into Rockingham County, North Carolina, and into Christian County, Kentucky. Only 2 references are found in Louisa County records to a Mary SMITH (1774 and 1790) and in both cases she is the wife of a William SMITH of Goldmine Creek area north of Louisa Courthouse. Another reference points to this William Smith possibly living early 1770s in Albemarle County. The best evidence may be that a William SMITH is the only witness to a a deed dated 13 April 1771 in which John BRADLEY of Louisa County sells cattle and sheep to Thomas Johnson. This could be "unknown" Smith and John Bradley, whose wives were Davis sisters. The William and Mary SMITH referenced here are associated in one deed with a Sarah SMITH and a James SMITH (deceased by 1790). Any info appreciated.

I am interested in any information on this family. I found a will for 1799, for Laurance YOUNG, who I believe is the son of a Laurance Sr. and Margaret Young. I am under the impression that this Will is in Louisa, Virginia. Laurance Young Sr. died in 1779 in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Margaret Young died in 1800 and should be buried with Laurance Young that Died in 1779. I believe that Laurance Jr. was married to a person named Hosea or Hosey. I am a descendent of another son of Laurance Sr., William Young, who lived in Fayette, Kentucky. If anyone can help fill in the blanks for this family, please let me know. Jeff Jeppson
